Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich Musik - Sonstiges, Note: 1,0, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (Musikhochschule Münster), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Warum schreibt man eine Diplomarbeit über Gustav Mahler? Es ist erst ein paar Jahre her, dass ich mit diesem Komponisten und dadurch unweigerlich auch mit dem Menschen Gustav Mahler in Berührung kam. Von Anfang an übte dieser Musiker eine Anziehungskraft auf mich aus, die ich in einem solchen Maße vorher nicht kannte. Die Musik erschien - und erscheint - mir wie ein Buch mit sieben Siegeln, und ich versuchte, mehr über Mahler zu erfahren, indem ich über ihn zu lesen begann und natürlich vor allem seine Musik hörte. Dann bekam ich die Chance, bei gleich zwei verschiedenen Orchesterprojekten seine Musik zu spielen, und zwar beide Male die I. Symphonie. Die damit verbundenen musikalischen Erlebnisse und 'Empfindungserfahrungen' ließen mich endgültig zu einem Verehrer dieses Künstlers werden, und ich versuchte, mehr von seiner Musik verstehen zu lernen. Von meinen eigenen Erfahrungen abgesehen bin ich aber immer wieder auf Menschen - seien es professionelle Musiker oder nicht - gestoßen, die mit der Musik Mahlers nichts anfangen konnten, sie zwar als gewaltig beschrieben, aber keinen wirklichen Zugang zu ihr fanden. Wenn man nun die Musikwissenschaft betrachtet, fällt auf, dass sich mehr Menschen über Mahler den Kopf zerbrochen haben als über andere Komponisten. Gerade die Tatsache, dass es schwerfällt, die Musik zu verstehen und die Unbequemlichkeit zu überwinden, die diese gelegentlich aufweist, lädt viele Theoretiker dazu ein, Erklärungen liefern zu wollen und die Musik durch eventuelle Quellen und Hintergründe zu erläutern. Mahler hat sich selbst in ausführlicher Weise zu seinen eigenen Werken geäußert, so dass man auf einen Fundus zurückgreifen und daraus Schlüsse ziehen kann, wobei man davon ausgehen muss, dass die Meinungen und Deutungen von den verschiedenen Menschen von der jeweiligen subjek
