Inhaltsangabe: Gang der Untersuchung: Das erste Kapitel erzählt von der Entwicklung der mobilen Kommunikation von den ersten zellulären Anfängen bis hin zu einem Ausblick auf die zukünftige Mobilfunkgeneration. Der Rückblick beginnt Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts mit den Experimenten der analogen bis zur Erforschung der zellulären und digitalen Kommunikationssysteme. Ursprünglich stand die Abkürzung GSM für Groupe Spécial Mobile, die von der CEPT (Conference Européenne des Administrations des postes et des télécommunications) beauftragt, eine große Rolle für die einheitlichen technischen Entwicklungen der zellulären und digitalen Kommunikationssysteme gespielt hat. 1989 wurde die Groupe Spécial Mobile in das neu gegründete European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI) als „Technical Committee" übernommen. Die technischen Empfehlungen der Gruppe wurden vom ETSI als europaweit gültige Norm. Damit die Vision eines länderübergreifenden GSM-Marktes Realität werden konnte, haben 13 europäische Netzbetreiber bereits 1987 in Kopenhagen ein Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) unterzeichnet, mit dem sie sich verpflichteten, beim Aufbau des GSM-Netzes den ETSI-Standard einzuhalten. GSM wurde als Handelsmarke für die neue Mobilfunktechnologie bestimmt und die Groupe Spécial Mobile wurde in Special Mobile Group (SMG) umbenannt. 1992 wurden die GSM-Netze europaweit offiziell in Betrieb genommen. Im Juli 2001 telefonierten 564,5 Millionen Menschen weltweit in einem GSM Netz. Derzeit wird an der Umsetzung der UMTS - Technologie gearbeitet, die auf den Errungenschaften von GSM aufbaut. Das zweite Kapitel setzt sich mit der Netzarchitektur und der Signalisierung in der GSM-Technologie auseinander. Es werden die vier Subsysteme, die über Schnittstellen miteinander verbunden sind, ausführlich beschrieben. Es handelt sich dabei um die Mobilstation und das Subscriber Identity Module, das Base Station Subsystem (oder Funknetz), das Network Switching System (oder Mobilvermittlungsnetz)
