About the Book

After centuries of absence, wild boar are back in Britain.

Large, messy and complex - the boar's presence is obvious but seeing them can be next to impossible - they are already proving themselves to be touchstones for the rewilding debate, and the question of how people can live alongside other wild beings. Chantal Lyons examines what is known about wild boar ecology and tells their story as part of her own personal journey of discovery, drawing on her personal experiences with the animals and interviews with other 'boar people'.

Extirpated by the 1600s, the boar's re-establishment in the 1990s was a product of a combination of illicit releases and the species' own tenacity. The Forest of Dean in Gloucestershire has become their UK stronghold, but while many residents and tourists delight in the presence of boar, others fear or revile them, even poaching them to extinction in some parts of the UK.

The boar's right to exist in Britain is debated not only due to their impacts on people, but also on ecosystems that have changed in their absence. Like beaver, boar are 'ecosystem engineers', with their foraging behaviour impacting positively on a wide range of other species. The beaver, however, has been taken to the rewilder's heart, yet the boar remains ignored. Is it too elusive to be loved? Why is there no clamour to reintroduce this animal across the land, to all of its former haunts?

About the Author: Chantal Lyons is a writer and conservation biologist based in Bristol. Following a number of years working in the charity sector, most recently focusing on sustainable fishing at the Marine Stewardship Council, Chantal switched to conservation science, and she is now Communications Officer for the Welsh Dee Trust, which works to protect and restore the River Dee in Wales and Cheshire. Having had a nature-impoverished upbringing like so many other people in Britain, she became a strong supporter of rewilding, which led her to begin studying the relationship between people and wild boar in the Forest of Dean.
