Alphonse de Lamartine (nom complet: Alphonse Marie Louis de Prat de Lamartine), né à Mâcon le 21 octobre 1790 et mort à Paris le 28 février 1869 est un poète, romancier, dramaturge et prosateur en même temps qu'un homme politique français qui participa à la Révolution de février 1848 et proclama la Deuxième République. Il est l'une des grandes figures du romantisme en France. Alphonse de Lamartine passe son enfance en Bourgogne du sud, en particulier à Milly, qui nourrira son inspiration poétique, et se forme au collège à Lyon puis à Belley avant de revenir dans le Mâconnais où il mène une vie de jeune homme oisif et séducteur. Il voyage en Italie et occupe une éphémère fonction militaire auprès de Louis XVIII. En octobre 1816, en cure à Aix-les-Bains, la rencontre avec une jeune femme mariée, Julie Charles, marque un tournant décisif dans la vie du poète mais leur histoire d'amour passionnée vire à la tragédie lorsque Julie, restée à Paris, meurt en décembre 1817. Alphonse de Lamartine écrit alors les poèmes des Méditations dont le recueil est publié en 1820 et obtient un succès fulgurant. Il épouse la même année Marianne-Elisa Birch, une jeune Anglaise, et occupe des fonctions de secrétaire d'ambassade en Italie avant de démissionner en 1830. Il publie durant cette période d'autres oeuvres poétiques comme, en 1823, les Nouvelles Méditations poétiques et La Mort de Socrate, ou encore, en juin 1830, les Harmonies poétiques et religieuses après avoir été élu à l'Académie française en 1829. Présentation générale D'abord intégré à l'ouvrage autobiographique Les Confidences (Livres VII à X) en 1849, ce roman fut publié seul en 1852 et fut dès lors le livre le plus lu de son auteur. Lamartine y évoque l'Italie et surtout la région napolitaine, où il séjourna à deux reprises, d'abord durant sa jeunesse, en 1811 et 1812, ensuite en 1844, en compagnie de sa femme et de ses nièces. Reprenant certains thèmes chers au romantisme (l'ennui, le vague des passions, la fougue et les idéaux de jeunesse, le voyage, l'harmonie de l'homme et de la nature), il y romance son premier séjour, et dessine le portrait charmant d'une adolescente amoureuse, d'une "Ève naïve", meurtrie par l'abandon. Ce roman vaut surtout pour la description de la jeunesse romantique et pour la poésie pittoresque de ses descriptions, notamment celles de l'île d'Ischia, de la Naples populaire (l'astrico) et du Vésuve. L'"Épisode" de la tempête en mer reprend enfin habilement un véritable topos épique. Lamartine y exprime également son amour de la littérature romantique (il mentionne Corinne de Madame de Staël, Les Années d'apprentissage de Wilhelm Meister ou Les Souffrances du jeune Werther de Goethe, Les Dernières Lettres de Jacopo Ortis d'Ugo Foscolo) et avoue son admiration pour le Paul et Virginie de Bernadin de Saint-Pierre, roman qui se trouve au centre du récit.
