La brochure Capital et Rente avait fait une certaine impression sur les classes ouvrières, à qui l'auteur s'adressait, et produit une scission dans certaine portion du socialisme. La Voix du Peuple jugea donc nécessaire de combattre cet écrit. -- Au premier article de M. Chevé, Bastiat fit demander la permission de répondre et l'obtint. Mais il fut prévenu que, pour la continuation de la discussion, M. Proudhon se substituait à M. Chevé. Les répliques se succédèrent à peu près de semaine en semaine jusqu'à la treizième lettre, dans laquelle M. Proudhon déclara le débat clos. Il fit de la collection des treize lettres un volume sous ce titre: Intérêt et Principal. Bastiat, usant de son droit, publia de son côté la même collection, augmentée d'une quatorzième lettre, et lui donna pour titre: Gratuité du crédit. Quelques personnes ont trouvé excessive la patience de Bastiat pendant le cours de cette discussion. Ce paragraphe et le précédent motivent parfaitement son attitude. Il attachait un grand prix à faire pénétrer, parmi les ouvriers, quelques vérités salutaires, à l'aide même de la Voix du Peuple. Ce résultat, il fut encouragé bientôt à s'applaudir de l'avoir poursuivi. Un matin, peu de jours avant la clôture du débat, il reçut la visite de trois ouvriers, délégués d'un certain nombre de leurs camarades qui s'étaient rangés sous la bannière du Crédit gratuit. Ces ouvriers venaient le remercier de ses bonnes intentions, de ses efforts pour les éclairer sur une question importante. Ils n'étaient point convertis à la légitimité et à l'utilité de l'intérêt; mais leur foi dans le principe contraire était fort ébranlée et ne tenait plus qu'à leurs vives sympathies pour M. Proudhon. Il nous veut beaucoup de bien, M. Proudhon, disaient-ils, et nous lui devons une grande reconnaissance. C'est dommage qu'il aille souvent chercher des mots et des phrases si difficiles à comprendre. Finalement, ils émirent le voeu que MM. Bastiat et Proudhon pussent se mettre d'accord
