Als Reaktion auf die Zersplitterung und Verhirnung des modernen Menschen, auf die Entfremdung von der Natur und den Verlust eines gesicherten Glaubens fordert Goethe mit Nachdruck im späteren Werk, daß sich der Mensch immer wieder erneuere, statt im Festen zu erstarren. Dazu bedürfe es vor allem der Phantasie. Diese Arbeit zeigt auf, daß Bilder der Erneuerung durch Phantasie in bisher nicht gekannter Form ins Spätwerk eingegangen sind. So wird gezeigt, daß die Karawanen im «West-östlichen Divan» nicht nur Teil der Fiktion vom Dichter als Handelsreisendem sind, sondern in ihrem Hin- und Widerschweifen Verkörperungen der Phantasie selber. Im «Faust»-Kapitel geht es um den Nachweis vielfältig miteinander verknüpfter Geburts- oder Neugeburtsmetaphorik. Mehr noch: Der Dichter zeichnet in seinen Text eine Fülle von Gebärmutterformen ein; so wenn «die Menge» durch die «enge Gnadenpforte» drängt, wenn Phiolen oder Delphine zu Zeichen des ewigen Kreislaufs werden, sich in Buchten und Schluchten Tod und Neugeburt ereignen. Das Abschlußkapitel beschäftigt sich mit Gottfried Benns lebenslanger Affinität zu Goethe. Benn sieht in Goethe den heimlichen Nihilisten, der sich unter großen Anfechtungen immer wieder auf den «Olymp des Scheins» zu retten versuchte. In unvermuteter Spiegelung Bennscher Formulierungen finden sich hier noch einmal Goethes «Caravanen».
About the Author: Die Autorin: Marlene Lohner wuchs in Bremen auf, studierte in Erlangen Germanistik und Musikwissenschaft und promovierte dort 1953 mit einer Arbeit über literarische Wertung. Im gleichen Jahr wanderte sie in die USA aus. Sie unterrichtete deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Columbia und an der New York University, wo sie ihren Mann, den Germanisten und Komparatisten Edgar Lohner, kennenlernte. 1962 Übersiedlung der Familie nach Stanford/Kalifornien. Übersetzung grundlegender Schriften der Literaturtheorie ins Deutsche, darunter Victor Erlichs Buch über den russischen Formalismus und die «Theory of Literature» von Wellek/Warren. 1973 Rückkehr nach Deutschland. 1975 starb Edgar Lohner. 1981 und 1991 erschienen ihre Bücher «Plötzlich allein - Frauen nach dem Tod des Partners» und das Marie Luise Kaschnitz-Buch «Was willst du, du lebst.» Seit 1977 ist Marlene Lohner als Dozentin für Deutsche Literatur in der Erwachsenenbildung tätig. Schwerpunkte: Goethe und die Moderne.
