Wahl pflegte Wau des öfteren an seine Bürgerlichkeit zu erinnern, und dieser, keineswegs erschüttert, konnte es doch niemals unterlassen, in seiner Antwort die Frage nach Wahls Bürgerlichkeit ausdrücklich offen zu lassen. Beide wünschten unbemakelt von einer Wesensart zu bleiben, bei deren Erwähnung keiner an etwas Bestimmtes dachte. An einem frostigen Abend warf sich Wau indessen mit Behagen in einen gut gefütterten und an den Schultern brav gepolsterten Mantel, und während er ihn vor dem Spiegel zuknöpfte, nachdem er noch ein weniges an seiner Krawatte gefingert hatte, lächelte er seinem Spiegelbild beifällig zu und würde, so seine Vorstellungen in diesem Augenblick auf der Zunge geprickelt hätten, gesagt haben: gut bürgerlich, freilich, aber er sitzt warm, und ich fühle mich mollig darin. So trat er auf die Straße, wo er wie manche andere Beamten, Lehrer und sonstige Würdenträger von Gericht oder Post oder Steuer wohnte. Sie war kahl, normal, wohlanständig, und es schien Wau in seinem bürgerlichen Mantel, daß die Kahlheit und Normalhaftigkeit die Kälte des Abends besonders schaurig fühlbar machten. So also machte er sich's in seinem Mantel recht behaglich, wippte mit den Achseln, stopfte die Hände in die Taschen und zog die Schultern in die Höhe. Wenn seine Straße sich an ihrer Kahlheit genug getan, lief sie zwar geradeaus weiter, hieß nach wie vor gleichen Namens, ließ sich aber einigen Bewuchs gefallen und endete als Lindenallee. Auf den ersten dieser Lindenbäume hatte sich eine Katze vor Hunden gerettet und sich, im Geäst höhersteigend, rettungslos verklettert, die Hunde hatten sich verlaufen, aber die Kletterkünste der Katze hatten bankerott gemacht. Sie saß im Frost des Abends oben und mußte sitzen bleiben, da sie nicht abwärts steigen konnte, und aus der Nachbarschaft hatte ihre Not die Teilnahme anderer Katzen beschworen, die nun aus dunkeln Winkeln und Ecken die Anteiligkeit ihrer Katzenseelen am Ungemach der einen aus feurigen Augen leuchten ließen.
