About the Book

Hundreds of thousands of college students will graduate this year from American colleges and universities. In this turbulent economy, students face a workplace far different from that of the past. They need a new game plan. This book explains the processes, provides the research, and outlines the tools necessary to help college students navigate one of the most important journeys of their lives: finding a first career. Bringing the practical and philosophical together in one easy to read resource, Beth Kuhel and Mauri Artz deliver a comprehensive guide to help reduce stress and assist in finding that ultimate first job. The book covers the five vital steps that are often overlooked and the order in which they should be taken for maximum benefit: self analysis; identifying a sustainable industry that matches personal strengths; identifying a sustainable place to live that houses viable industries; setting up an informational interview with someone who has a dream job in that industry; and finally, making the match and sealing the deal. The perfect compass to help young people find a calling, choose a career, and locate the best place to get hired after college, this book includes invaluable information on topics such as: figuring out your personal passion; researching industry trends that match your passion with a sustainable career arc; planning/preparing while in college to brand yourself for a career; minding gatekeepers; how to best promote yourself in the marketplace; gaining access through successful cover letters, resumes, and interviews; assessing location; and entering the workplace with eyes wide open. There is a special section "for girls eyes only" which addresses many concerns of young women who are entering the workforce. From Diploma to Dream Job is, in short, the most thorough, practical approach to the transition from education to career entry. Parents invest thousands of dollars and assume sizable debt to help pay for their children's college education. Students put in thousands of hours studying, working to earn that degree. Finally, they both have a compendious resource to assist in the transition process from student to wage earner. Loaded with practicable tips, strategies, philosophies, and a review of the top ten most sustainable places to live, From Diploma to Dream Job is the #1 guidebook for college graduates to launch a successful career.
