Decia Marguerite Yourcenar que una de las mejores maneras de recrear los pensamientos de alguien es reconstruir su biblioteca. Y mas en el caso de un escritor. Y mas todavia en el caso de Augusto Monterroso, cuya obra se alimenta principalmente de literatura. Leticia Sanchez Ruiz bucea en la biblioteca personal de Monterroso que Barbara Jacobs, su viuda, dono a la Universidad de Oviedo, y a partir de ese legado trata de reconstruir su vida y su obra como si fuera un mapa de su propia vida y del tesoro que queria encontrar. De un modo casi detectivesco iremos descubriendo los recortes de prensa de naufragios que guardaba dentro de Moby Dick, las correcciones a lapiz que le hacia a los cuentos de su amigo Cortazar, las dedicatorias carinosisimas de Garcia Marquez, Neruda, Rulfo y tantos otros, las notas que escribia a mano en los margenes o los parrafos que subrayaba, revelando que una biblioteca puede llegar a mostrar rasgos de su propietario tales como la ironia, la concision y la lucidez. No hay nada mas personal para un escritor que la forma en la que se relaciona con los libros. Y de esta forma nos acercaremos a la intimidad de Augusto Monterroso, uno de los cuentistas mas reconocidos de todos los tiempos y un autor admirado por otros gigantes de las letras como Roberto Bolano, Isaac Asimov e Italo Calvino. Su brevedad, su humor, su forma sosegada de entender el mundo y la condicion humana forman parte ya de la literatura universal. Pero, como decia el propio guatemalteco, cada cosa significa al menos dos cosas y cada texto rinde un irreverente homenaje a la historia de la literatura. Por tanto, esta obra habla de Augusto Monterroso, y tambien de los problemas que asolan a los escritores, de la avidez lectora, de la historia de los libros y de como las bibliotecas reflejan a sus duenos.
