Foucault gilt als einer der ganz großen Poststrukturalisten, lehnte selbst aber jede Zuordnung seines Denkens ab. Tatsachlich kunden schon seine spektakularen Buchtitel von einer radikal neuen Sicht auf die Dinge, so etwa: "Wahnsinn und Gesellschaft", "Uberwachen und Strafen", "Der Gebrauch der Luste", "Die Ordnung der Dinge". Foucault gehort zu jenen Philosophen, deren Bedeutung nach ihrem Tod nicht nachlasst, sondern bestandig zunimmt. Dieser Umstand ist erfreulich und bedenklich zugleich. Erfreulich, weil Foucaults zentraler Gedanke lebendig geblieben ist und immer relevanter wird, bedenklich, weil eben dieser Kerngedanke etwas Beunruhigendes hat: "der Mensch verschwindet, wie am Meeresufer ein Gesicht im Sand." Foucault meint mit seiner These vom "Tod des Menschen" nicht, dass wir als Gattung aussterben, etwa durch die Klimaerwarmung. Er will uns zu verstehen geben, dass der Mensch, so wie wir ihn kennen, namlich als freies, selbstbestimmtes und spontan lustvolles Wesen allmahlich verschwindet. Er lost sich in den Diskursen und Strukturen unserer Zwangsgesellschaft auf - und zwar auf dieselbe lautlose Art, wie ein in den Sand gezeichnetes Gesicht von den Wellen verwischt wird. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurde ein neuartiges rundes Gefangnis entwickelt, das dem Wachter vom Mittelpunkt aus, die Beobachtung aller Gefangenen erlaubt. Dieses Gefuhl, jederzeit beobachtet zu sein, ist, so Foucault, zum Modell fur unsere gesamte Gesellschaft geworden. Letztlich entwickelt er seinen Kerngedanken in 3 Schritten: Als erstes grabt und forscht er wie ein Archaologe nach alten Uberzeugungen, die unsere heutigen Einstellungen hervorgebracht und gepragt haben. In einem zweiten Schritt kritisiert er diese Geisteshaltung, da sie viele Menschen ausgrenzt, und uns alle von unseren Bedurfnissen abschneidet. In einem dritten und letzten Schritt versucht er trotz des Ausgeliefertseins an die Zwangsgesellschaft, ein Konzept fur eine moderne Lebenskunst zu entwerfen. Wie sieht diese Lebenskunst aus? Ist es uberhaupt noch moglich, als einzelnes Subjekt aus der Zwangsgesellschaft auszubrechen? Hat Foucault mit seinem beruhmten Gefangnis-Paradigma recht und wir alle fuhlen uns beobachtet? Gipfelt womoglich unser digitales Zeitalter in totaler Selbstdisziplinierung? Kein Zweifel - Foucaults Gedanken sind von beunruhigender Aktualitat.
