About the Book

English summary: Hugo von Hofmannsthal clearly observed the social changes of his time and wished to sift through the consequences: the positionless individual, the marginalized artist, and the soulless society. Against the background of a modern social history, this work reconstructs von Hoffmansthals conflict with these three interrelated themes using hermeneutic analysis to investigate his more and less well known dramatic texts, essays and speeches. This work offers a representative profile from Tod des Tizian to the speech Das Schriftum als geistiger Raum der Nation, and shows systematically, for the first time, that honesty, ambivalence, and heterogeneity, essential motifs in Hofmannsthals work, were the result of his intellectual struggle with the fundamental questions of modern society. His oscillation between acceptance of modernity and the desire after its reform does not offer a fixed position or solution and the options he affords to individuals, artists and society were tentative and fragile.
