Dr. Michel Pastoureau (Histoire et Histoire de l'art, EPHE Paris) et la Prof. Dr. Susan Rankin (Musicologie, Cambridge), sont precedees en guise d'introduction par un essai critique de la Prof. Dr. Marion Uhlig (Langues et litteratures francaises et occitanes du Moyen Age, Fribourg). German description: Der vorliegende Band widmet sich dem Bedeutungskomplex des Zeichens. Er vereint die drei Beitrage, die als Hauptvortrage am 7. Graduiertenkurs des Mediavistischen Instituts vom 3.-5. September an der Universitat Freiburg gehalten wurden und wird durch eine gehaltvolle Einfuhrung begleitet. Dieser interdisziplinare Kurs, der sich den Figurationen der Schriftlichkeit im Mittelalter widmete (Buchstaben, Zahlen, Noten und Symbolen) interessierte sich zugleich fur die handgeschriebene Manuskriptseite als Raum der Interaktion zwischen ihrer Bedeutung (signifie) und deren graphischer Gestaltung (signifiant), zwischen Inhalt und Form. Dr. Michel Pastoureau (Geschichte und Kunstgeschichte, EPHE Paris) und Prof. Dr. Susan Rankin (Musikologie, Cambridge) werden durch einen kritischen Essay von Prof. Dr. Marion Uhlig (Franzosische und okzitanische Sprache und Literatur des Mittelalters, Freiburg) eingefuhrt.
