Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2021 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 13,5/20, Université du Luxembourg (Institut für deutsche Sprache, Literatur und Interkulturalität), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich vorwiegend mit der Person des Goldschmieds und Mörders René Cardillac, der in der Erzählung von E.T.A. Hoffmanns Roman "Das Fräulein von Scuderi" eine ganz besondere Rolle einnimmt. Neben der Scuderi ist er einer der Protagonisten, die am meisten Erzählraum in dem Roman benötigen. Auf den ersten Blick wirkt er wie ein unscheinbarer und nicht weiter bedrohlicher Goldschmied, jedoch wird im weiteren Verlaufe des Romans der wahre Charakter des Cardillac enttarnt. Zunächst wird dieser im Kontext des Genies betrachtet, danach im Kontext des Wahnsinnigen. Nach Abschluss dieser beiden Erläuterungen wird versucht, die Frage, ob es sich bei René Cardillac um ein wahnsinniges Genie handelt, zu beantworten, diese Frage stellt überdies das Ziel dieser Arbeit dar. Zudem wird versucht, festzustellen und zu erklären, wie weit der Grat zwischen Genie und Wahnsinn eigentlich auseinanderliegt. Anfangs wird jedoch die Entstehungsgeschichte aufgegriffen, da es für das Verständnis der Novelle Sinn macht, die Quellen Hoffmanns zu kennen, einschätzen und erkennen zu können, was in dem Roman realhistorischen Hintergrund haben könnte, so gibt es beispielsweise Überlieferungen, die die thematisierten Giftmorde und die "chambre ardente" ohne jeglichen Zweifel belegen können. Ein kurzer Einblick in die Rezeption des Werkes wird außerdem gewährt, um zu veranschaulichen, welch riesigen Erfolg die Veröffentlichung auslöste. In der Schlussbetrachtung werden alle bis dahin gewonnen Erkenntnisse noch einmal kurz aufgegriffen und eingeordnet. Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmanns Roman "Das Fräulein von Scuderi" gilt als eine der bekanntesten und meist behandelten Erzählungen des Autors.
