C'est un drame au ton populaire où s'accumule des péripéties que personne n'attend. C'est un thriller moderne, le suspense surprendra le lecteur.
Antonio est un immigré italien, il est arrivé en France voilà 30, il a une cinquantaine d'année. Il est originaire du mezzo, c'est le sud de l'Italie. Il lui manque, son coeur est toujours là-bas, la France ce n'est pas un choix, mais une nécessité.
Il vit dans la banlieue parisienne, à Montreuil, en Seine Saint-Denis. Il travaille au service des égouts de la ville de Paris, des contrats de de travail à durée déterminée de six mois, il ne les compte plus. Depuis 20 ans, il a franchi le cap des quarante contrats.
C'est un héros malgré lui, il n'en a pas l'étoffe, ce n'est un individu sans coeur, il dévoile de l'empathie envers ceux qui n'ont rien. Ce n'est pas un mec musclé sans cervelle.
Tous les matins, il se rend à Paris en métro, dans le onzième arrondissement de Paris. Paris historique lui ouvre les portes. Le faubourg Saint-Antoine, la place de la Bastille, la petite et la grande Roquette et le boulevard de Ménilmontant appartiennent au monde, ces lieux sont rattachés à l'histoire. La prise de la Bastille symbolise la chute de l'arbitraire, la déclaration Universelle des droits de l'homme.
N'importe où qu'il aille, le passé lui cligne de l'oeil, d'autres noms poursuivent l'émerveillement, le cimetière du père Lachaise, Beaubourg, le marais. Ce sont des endroits emblématiques de la capitale.
Mais le récit se déroulent sous terre. C'est la ville souterraine sans Paris des cafards, des rats, des mauvaises odeurs, le soleil est absent, une lumière blafarde illumine les murs. Jean Valjean l'a traversé. Ici, on n'évoque pas la piétonisation de la capitale.
Au lever du soleil, au square de la Roquette, il rencontre une personne sans-abri, c'est une femme, elle s'appelle Marcelle. La vie au travers de la rue a fané son éclat, c'est une fleur qui a perdu sa beauté. Son visage terne et sans rire engendre la pitié. Il discute avec elle au sujet du temps qui passe. Il dépose un pain à côté d'elle sans dire un mot, et il s'en va.
Son travail consiste a surveiller, réparer les canalisations, il en l'entretien des égouts, la mauvaise odeur l'incommode, le soir, il prend l'air, il respire. L'air parisien lui permet de chasser les mauvaises odeurs de cette ville souterraine. Il parle de gouffre, chaque fois qu'il descend.
Un jour, il aperçoit, une ombre, il se persuade qu'il s'agit du fantôme de Jean Valjean, Victor Hugo a écrit qu'il était maire de Montreuil. L'ombre traine une patte, Jean Valjean aussi.
