Mit diesen Worten blickt Polybios in seinen Historien auf einen zeitgenössischen Herrscher zurück. Es ist interessant, dass der demokratisch gesinnte Hipparch des Achäischen Bundes, der die Geschichte des Aufstiegs der Republik Rom zur Weltmacht dokumentieren wollte, solch schmeichelhafte Anerkennung einem Monarchen angedeihen lässt. Polybios ehrt hier ein letztes Mal Eumenes II., König von Pergamon (Regierungsjahre 197-160/59). Dem Leser dieses Nachrufs offenbart sich damit unmittelbar die Frage, weshalb Polybios ein solch positives Bild eines Monarchen zeichnet. Wie gelang es Eumenes II., einen solchen Eindruck auf den Historiker zu hinterlassen - und wirkte er gleichermaßen positiv auch auf andere Zeitgenossen? Diese Arbeit geht der Frage nach, wie sich der berühmte pergamenische König selbst darstellte, welches Bild er von sich prägen wollte und ob dies letztlich überall so erfolgreich gelang, wie es der Nachruf des Polybios suggeriert. Das pergamenische Reich begann als eine bescheidene hellenistische Stadt in Mysien, die sich 262 vom Seleukidenreich löste. Pergamon dehnte sich entlang der kleinasiatischen Küste sowie nach Osten aus, wobei die Expansion bis zu Eumenes II. häufig zurückgedrängt wurde und damit eher bescheiden blieb. Nach dem Sieg gegen den Seleukiden-König Antiochos III. änderte sich dies schlagartig. Pergamon expandierte um ein Vielfaches. In der Folge konnte das Territorium mit bestehenden Mittel- und Großmächten konkurrieren. Eumenes II. musste sich daher nicht nur im eigenen
