About the Book

The current book focuses on Margaret Atwood's poetry in the light of Ecocriticism in order to demonstrate the poet's views in relation to the interdependence of man and Nature. Atwood's ecopoetry is an extended enterprise that seeks formulating an alternative relationship between the inherently dichotomous construction of humankind and Nature, a utopian community based on love and appreciation of the former. She directly criticizes and deconstructs modernist mindsets and anthropocentric flags of progress. She looks for a constructive holistic perspective of planet Earth in which reconciliation replaces exploitation. The book clarifies the poet's deconstructive perspective of the socially-constructed views of the instrumental value of Nature and emphasizes its intrinsic significance. In the light of current ecological degradation and eminent myriad of environmental disasters, the poetic work of Atwood - a mixture of jeremiad and rhapsody - is of tremendous significance as it moves from anthropocentrism to biocentrism through the concept of ecological dwelling. Accordingly, this study helps the contemporaries grow an ecological thinking and awaken their ecological consciousness in an era dominated by the technological monster they have created. Those interested in environmental texts, admirers of Margaret Atwood, lovers of poetry, others who approach poetry timidly, scholars assigned to studying Atwood's poetry and teachers in search of interesting ecocritical texts to teach will find in this book a fertile land that satisfies all tastes from English-speaking individuals to non-English speakers with its detailed, clear and simple discussion of Atwood's poetry. The book introduces a line for line analysis of poems in contradiction to many critical voices that keep saying that Atwood writes ecocritical poetry without providing the readers with satisfying analyses. For a clearer reading, all volumes and poem titles appear in bold inside the book and are alphabetically arranged in an index at its juncture.
