No hay nada tan peligroso y perturbador como la soledad. Puede ser un premio o un castigo, algo deseado o repudiado, un sintoma de locura o de evidente cordura, la prueba del exito o la manifestacion de una derrota. Por eso los cinco relatos largos de este libro presentan la soledad como una enorme paradoja, el grial luminoso y oscuro que buscamos con la esperanza de no encontrarlo jamas. Es imposible estar solo, el fluido de nuestro pensamiento lleno de palabras pertenece a la sociedad, contiene a la multitud. Sin embargo, la conquista de la soledad es necesaria para la creacion de la persona individualizada del grupo, no devorada y anulada por el conjunto. Asi lo comprenden los protagonistas del primer relato, Las hojas mas duras, blancas y brillantes, donde una chica y un chico que crecen juntos utilizan a sus perros como talisman para defenderse de una realidad cada vez mas abducida por las redes sociales. Al contrario que ellos, en el relato que da titulo al libro, una hippie desenganada se reintegra a la sociedad fabricando un perfil falso que oculta su vacio interior. En el tercero, Escaparate, una pareja es contratada por unos grandes almacenes para mostrar durante un ano su intimidad a una clientela ordinaria y barata. El siguiente, El Laboratorio, retrocede en el tiempo para encontrar el origen turbio de la demolicion de un grupo de amigos. Y el ultimo, La casa sosegada, nos presenta a un matrimonio de profesores acomodados que se embarca en un experimento arriesgado y extravagante para conservar su insatisfactorio estilo de vida. Cinco visiones diferentes de un mismo problema, la hostilidad de un mundo en decadencia que arrastra hacia el abismo al individuo, indefenso y carente de voluntad. Es preciso resistirse, la soledad es una consecuencia, pero tambien un recurso para supervivientes. Como advierte Paul Valery: “Hay un culpable en todo ser que se separa... Una percepcion extrana y oscura del peligro de estar sonando entre la multitud y el agua.”
