Aktuell ist diese bestimmt durch Frühverrentung, Altersteilzeit oder Fortbildungsmaßnahmen bis maximal 40-45 Jahren. Um wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben, bedarf es einer Personalpolitik, die alle im Unternehmen vorhandenen Potentiale nutzt und fördert. Das bedeutet, dass sich die Einstellung gegenüber Älteren grundlegend ändern sollte, die bisher geprägt ist von der Annahme, dass Ältere weniger leistungsfähig und innovativ sind (vgl. Buck, Weidenhöfer 2006, S. 113). Arbeitsstrukturen ändern sich immer öfter und somit auch die Arbeitsanforderungen. Um sich diesen Anforderungen anpassen zu können, muss eine fortwährende Bereit-schaft des Einzelnen zum Lernen gegeben sein. Die Aktualität des Wissens ist ent-scheidend für den Unternehmenserfolg, da 80% der heutigen Produktivitätszuwächse aus dem Einsatz von Wissen resultieren. Wissen selbst jedoch unterliegt einer immer kürzeren Halbwertszeit und somit ist dauerhafte Weiterbildung unumgänglich. Wird dies von Erwerbspersonen und Unternehmen ignoriert, droht die Gefahr, dass dieses Wissen nach einer Umstrukturierung oder technologischen Neuerung nicht mehr nutzbar ist und der Arbeitnehmer nicht mehr beschäftigungsfähig ist (vgl. Rump 2005, S. 14ff). Um beschäftigungsfähig zu sein, bedarf es nach dem Employabilitykonzept nicht nur eine fachliche Qualifikation, die dem aktuellen Wissensstand entspricht, sondern auch ein hohes Maß an überfachlichen Kompetenzen, wie z. B. Teamfähigkeit oder unternehmerisches Denken und Handeln. Zusätzlich sind es die eigenen Einstellungen und Haltungen, die die Beschäftigungsfähigkeit des Einzelnen sichern.
