About the Book

A 44 year old man at an emotional crossroads re-lives pivotal moments in his life whilst collecting driftwood on a Thai beach. We move from the backstage of a theatre to a public hospital, from blissful moments of parental joy to staring down the barrel of losing it all. "Driftwood" is six stories of his past that intertwine as he stumbles along the beach: lost, bewildered, crying like a baby, grinning wildly and hoping that he will wake up at last. The stories thread through each other and create a tapestry of missed opportunities for him to reflect on. From early childhood traumas, to his relationship woes, through to his experiences as a performing arts worker, the reader is propelled towards his inevitable breakdown, or as he calls it, breakthrough. From his stir-crazy hospital ramblings, where at 24 he faces losing his arm, to his early gentle fatherhood moments, the magic just below the surface of his life evades him. Along the way he meets some wild characters: people on some kind of an edge who are all searching for the same thing. A reason. Something other than the crap masquerading as a life that was on offer. Some solace amongst other weary souls. He becomes mesmerised by a log floating just beyond the breaking waves. And he starts to 'get' it. Or does he?
About the Author: Tony Cameron grew up in Melbourne, Australia. Escaped in his early twenties to Central Victoria, years before the big 'tree change'. Designed and built a sustainable house, raised two sustainable children. Worked for twenty years in the performing arts world as a sound engineer, lighting tech, tour manager and head tech. Has also worked as a fruit picker, firewood cutter, teacher, factory worker, truck driver, builder, tiler and farm worker, as well as volunteering for community radio stations and local fringe arts festivals, and writing journals and short stories between gigs and nappy changes. Whilst in hospital, and faced with losing his right arm, he wrote what became the basis of one of the Driftwood stories, 'The Raffle', with his left hand. His hunger for words is matched only by his love of vintage Ducati motorcycles. Recently relocated to Thailand where he spends his time writing, surfing and scouring the beaches for treasures, which he turns into sculptures and functional art. "Driftwood" is Tony's first novel.
