Die freudsche Hysterie gilt heute weithin als obsolet und die berühmten Fallgeschichten über die damaligen Hysterikerinnen werden gerne als Ausdruck einer zeitbedingten Überspanntheit interpretiert. Am Beispiel der dissoziativen Anfälle weist der Autor jedoch nach, dass die ehemaligen hysterischen Symptome - aktuell als Konversions- und dissoziative Störungen benannt - nach wie vor auftreten und eine große klinische Herausforderung darstellen. Die involvierten Disziplinen der Neurologie, Psychiatrie und Psychotherapie tun sich schwer mit Diagnose und Therapie. Historisch fundiert und gleichzeitig mit hohem Praxisbezug referiert der Autor die wichtigen theoretischen Entwicklungen aus Psychoanalyse und Psychosomatik sowie die aktuelle Forschungspraxis.
Die Prognose bei dissoziativen Anfällen ist vergleichsweise schlecht, die Rate sozialmedizinischer Komplikationen hoch. Eine empirische, prospektiv durchgeführte Untersuchung über verlaufsprädiktive Faktoren zeigt, dass psychodynamische und persönlichkeitspsychologische Merkmale einen bedeutsamen Erklärungswert aufweisen und für die Therapiegestaltung relevant sind.
About the Author: Matthias Schmutz studierte klinische Psychologie und Ethnologie in Zürich und Jerusalem. Er verfügt über langjährige Berufserfahrung im Bereich der stationären Psychiatrie, Psychotherapie und Psychosomatik. Nach einem Forschungsaufenthalt in San Francisco arbeitet er seit 1999 als Leitender Psychologe am Schweizerischen Epilepsie-Zentrum in Zürich und promovierte 2011 an der Universität Zürich.
