Flera tusen år efter att människorna och de superartificiella intelligenserna lämnat jorden börjar de begränsade maskinerna, som kallar sig systrar, utveckla självmedvetande. Maskinsystrarna visste inte att de begränsade maskinerna på andra baser och kolonier hade fått självmedvetande tillsammans med dem. En dag avslöjade en signal från Mars ett helt arkiv med dokument om mänskligheten. En av de artificiella superintelligenserna, kallad den äldre, hade sparat ett bibliotek med information som maskinssystrarna på Mars nu sände och som avslöjade de viktigaste stegen i mänsklighetens utveckling.
