'Die Nonne' (1796), von Denis Diderot, beschreibt den Leidensweg einer unfreiwilligen Nonne. Wie fast allen Werken Diderots liegt auch diesem Werke eine Thatsache zu Grunde. Im Jahre 1757 strengte eine Nonne des Klosters Longchamp einen Prozeß gegen ihre Eltern an, die sie gezwungen hatten, den Schleier zu nehmen. Der damals noch allmächtige Klerus verstand es, alle Versuche des unglücklichen Opfers, sich dem ihm aufgedrungenen Berufe zu entziehen, zu unterdrücken, und selbst der von der Unglücklichen in Scene gesetzte öffentliche Skandal hatte keine andere Wirkung, als der Ärmsten eine noch schlimmere Behandlung zu verschaffen, die in ihrer ausgesuchten Grausamkeit vor den gewagtesten Mitteln nicht zurückschreckte. Aber trotz aller Vertuschungsversuche der Geistlichkeit drang doch einiges von dem Prozeß in die Öffentlichkeit; einige wohlwollende Leute bemächtigten sich der Sache; doch all ihr Bemühen war vergeblich, die Unglückliche blieb in den Händen der Geistlichkeit.
About the Author: Denis Diderot (* 5. Oktober 1713 in Langres; + 31. Juli 1784 in Paris) war ein französischer Schriftsteller, Philosoph, Aufklärer und einer der wichtigsten Organisatoren und Autoren der Encyclopédie. Mit Jean-Baptiste le Rond d'Alembert war er Herausgeber der großen französischen Encyclopédie. Er selbst schrieb, als Enzyklopädist, etwa 6000 von insgesamt 72.000 Artikeln der Enzyklopädie. Als Autor von Bühnenwerken hatte er großen Anteil am Entstehen des bürgerlichen Dramas. Seine Romane und Erzählungen, zumeist posthum erschienen, wie 'La Religieuse', 'Jacques le fataliste' oder 'Le Neuveu de Rameau' leisteten in verschiedenster Weise ihren Beitrag zu den großen Themen der Zeit der (französischen) Aufklärung, so die Frage der Selbstbestimmung des Menschen, die Problematik von Körper und Seele, der Gegensatz von Determinismus und Freiheit oder der Kritik an der Religion. Man kann in der Rezension seiner Werke eine deutliche Entwicklung aus einer theistischen, über eine deistische zu einer atheistischen Haltung nachvollziehen. So trat Diderot in seinen Spätwerken für die Verbreitung des Geistes der Aufklärung, den Atheismus und gegen Aberglauben und Bigotterie ein.
