In der knapp dreißigjährigen Geschichte der Junkers-Werke entstanden zwischen 1915 und 1945 fast 30.000 Junkers-Flugzeuge. Die meisten dieser Flugzeuge wurden im zweiten Weltkrieg gebaut und gingen während ihres Kriegseinsatzes oft nach nur wenigen Einsatztagen verloren. Das, was am Ende des verlorenen Kriegs übrig blieb, war wertvoller Rohstoff und wurde zur Rohstoffgewinnung verschrottet. Hiervon blieben in Deutschland auch die Flugzeuge nicht verschont, die schon in den zwanziger und dreißiger Jahren als technisches Kulturgut in eines der aufstrebenden Technikmuseen gelangten. Einige wurden bei alliierten Bomberangriffen zerstört. Andere verschwanden auf dem Weg in vermeintlich sichere Lagerstellen. Anfang der fünfziger Jahre existierte in Deutschland keines der 30.000 Junkers-Flugzeuge mehr. Die heute noch existierenden, annähernd 100 Originalflugzeuge überstanden den Krieg durchweg außerhalb Deutschlands. Einige von ihnen haben inzwischen den Weg zurück in deutsche Luftfahrtmuseen gefunden. Eine Reihe guter Nachbauten ergänzt die wenigen Originale. Die vorliegende Buchreihe ist eine Bestandsaufnahme der heute noch existierenden Junkers-Flugzeuge, sowie der inzwischen hergestellten Nachbauten und dokumentiert die Geschichte dieser Geräte. Der erste Band beschäftigt sich mit den frühen Junkers Entwicklungen, die unter der Leitung von Hugo Junkers bis 1932 entstanden sind. Ein geplanter zweiter Band widmet sich der heute noch in großen Stückzahlen vorhandenen Junkers Ju52, während die Flugzeugentwicklungen nach der Zeit von Hugo Junkers in einem abschließenden dritten Band behandelt werden. Von den in diesem ersten Band behandelten frühen Entwicklungen wurden bis 1932 etwa 1.300 Flugzeuge gebaut. Nur 16 originale Maschinen sind davon bis heute erhalten geblieben. Sechs weitere Ausstellungsobjekte sind Nachbauten. Außerdem existieren drei flugfähige Junkers-ähnliche Flugzeuge in England und in den U.S.A., die auf Basis eines Bowers Tiefdeckers entstanden sind.
