Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, Note: 1,7, Hochschule Mainz, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die deutschen Banken befinden sich bereits seit Ende der 90er Jahre - mit kleineren Unterbrechungen - in einer tiefgreifenden Ertragskrise. Für die schwache Ertragsentwicklung der Banken werden verschiedene Ursachen angeführt. Zum einen verursachte der zunehmend hohe Wettbewerbsdruck durch neue Konkurrenten und der damit verbundene Preiswettbewerb schrumpfende Zinsüberschüsse. Zum anderen belasten die zum Teil konjunkturell bedingten, größeren Aufwendungen für die Risikovorsorge die Ergebnisse der Banken. Als eine weitere Ursache des gerade im europäischen Vergleich niedrigen Niveaus des Bankerfolgs wird u.a. die deutsche Drei-Säulen-Struktur, also das Bankensystem in der Bundesrepublik, gesehen. Dieses setzt sich aus privaten, öffentlich-rechtlichen und genossenschaftlichen Banken zusammen. Kritiker bezeichnen Deutschland als over-banked, was sich vor allem auf die relativ geringe Konzentration im deutschen Bankensektor bezieht. Zudem wird diese These auch mit mangelnden Konzentrationsmöglichkeiten zwischen den drei Säulen begründet, da Fusionen nur innerhalb der Säulen realisiert werden. Eine Konsolidierung des deutschen Bankensektors ist bereits angelaufen und wird sich in den nächsten Jahren fortsetzen. Der Verkauf der Dresdner Bank durch die Allianz an die Commerzbank in 2008 und die aktuelle Übernahme der Privatbank Sal. Oppenheim durch die Deutsche Bank belegen diese These. Auch im Bereich der Landesbanken hat eine zunehmende Konzentration eingesetzt. Nach der Verschmelzung der Landesbanken Rheinland-Pfalz und Sachsen auf die Landesbank Baden-Württemberg in 2008 sind bereits weitere Zusammenschlüsse geplant. Diese Veränderungen wurden durch die Schieflage der Spitzeninstitute der Sparkassen im Zuge der Verwerfungen an den Finanzmärkten begünstigt.
