In jeder Erzahlung sind zwei bis funf Protagonisten schicksalshaft miteinander verwoben. Sie tauschen und werden getauscht; hassen, weil nicht Liebe in ihrem Herzen obsiegt, sondern Tragheit die Herzen dominiert. So in der Erzahlung "Der Pelzmantel", in der sich zwei Menschen - einst liebend verbunden - von einander so weit entfernen, dass gegenseitige Tauschung alltaglich wird. Anders in der Erzahlung "Vergissmeinnicht", wo die Liebe eines Mannes starker ist als der Mann selbst. Gluck wird oft nur als eine kurzfristige Attitude erlebt, die Chaos hinterlasst, weil man das Scheitern noch nicht beherrscht. Wie in fruhen Lebensjahren erworbenes Urvertrauen gegen die Anfeindungen des Lebens immunisiert, beschreiben die Erzahlungen "Daniel" und "Ein reines Madchen". In der Erzahlung "Das Inserat" sturzt eine Liebe an den Fehlbarkeiten fruherer Protagonisten in den Abgrund. Gelungen ist das Leben immer dann, wenn die Menschen im Besitze der Liebe waren. Zwar lauert auch ihnen das Schicksal auf, aber es zeigt sich versohnlich- so in der Erzahlung" Frau Josefine Meyer - eine unbegabte Mutter". Nichts Menschliches ist den Figuren fremd. Dass Mut und Vertrauen in die "heilende Wirkung der Wahrheit" ungeahnte Krafte freisetzen konnen, wird in "Spontanheilung" geschildert. Das Schicksal schlagt nicht ungerecht und blind zu, es hat nur andere Plane, die sich jedoch willentlich vom Menschen durchkreuzen lassen. So kann in der Erzahlung "Die Liebe des Kaplans" unbeschadet von der vorherrschenden Sexualmoral eine "sundige" Liebe glucklich gelebt werden. Dagegen muss "Die Saat der Mutter" zum Verhangnis werden, weil sie sich das Recht nimmt, das Schicksal dritter zu manipulieren. Wie eine Demenzerkrankung die Vertrautheit einer langjahrigen Ehe bis zum gegenseitigen "Wurdeverlust" zerstort, erzahlt gleichnamige Geschichte, dagegen kann die Flucht in eine Verrucktheit von den Bedrangnissen des Lebens befreien, wie in der Erzahlung "Emanuel" geschildert. Jede Erzahlung endet mit einer unerwarteten Pointe, die den Leser daran erinnert, dass sich das Leben nicht vorherbestimmen lasst. Es halt sowohl Glucksmomente als auch traumatische Uberraschungen bereit, die jeden jederzeit aus seinem bisherigen Dasein herausschleudern konnen, ihn wieder "erden" lassen, so er sich dem Daseinskampf stellt.
