Der Roman handelt von der Frage nach dem Warum und einem eigenen Anspruch auf Gluck. Die Hauptfigur verliert seine Frau durch ein Gewaltverbrechen. Allein tragt er nun die Verantwortung fur Tochter und Hund. Sein Leben muss er nun neu organisieren und lernen mit der Trauer und dem Verlust umzugehen. Unterstutzung erhalt er von Anne, der besten Freundin seiner verstorbenen Frau. Unter dem Eindruck des Verlustes, der Neuordnung seines Lebens und seiner chronischen Schlaflosigkeit, beginnt er die Kontrolle uber sein Leben zu verlieren und sich Selbstvorwurfe zu machen. Durch kleine Erlebnisse des Lebens und in intensiven Gesprachen zwischen ihm und Anne wird nach dem Grund fur unser Handeln und nach der Moglichkeit der Einflussnahme auf unser Schicksal gesucht. Es wird aufgezeigt, wie rational unser Leben aufgebaut ist. Der freie Wille wird infrage gestellt und es wird ergrundet, was dies bedeuten wurde. Es werden verschiedene Ansatze gedanklich durchgespielt, sodass der Leser selbst sich auf die Suche nach seiner eigenen Losung begeben kann. Anne versucht ihm neuen Lebensmut zu geben, und ihn zur Suche nach seinem personlichen Gluck zu ermuntern. Anne und er nahern sich in dieser Phase immer mehr an. Derweil erlebt er beruflich ein Auf und Ab. Zusammen mit den schrecklichen Erinnerungen an die Tat und alles was ihn daran erinnert fuhren diese beruflichen Erfahrungen dazu, dass er nach einem Neuanfang sucht. Beruflich bietet sich ihm dieser Neuanfang durch ein Jobangebot aus dem Ausland. Hat er den Mut fur einen solchen Neuanfang? Was wurde der Neuanfang fur ihn und seine Tochter bedeuten? Was wurde ein solcher Neuanfang fur Anne bedeuten, und ist sie mittlerweile ein entsprechender Bestandteil seines Lebens, der einen solchen Neuanfang mit ihm wagen wurde? In der Verhandlung gegen die beiden Tater wird versucht zu ergrunden, warum Menschen zu Tatern werden und unter welch unterschiedlichen Gegebenheiten solche Handlungen entstehen konnen. Wie viel Schuld trifft die Tater und welche juristische und moralische Verantwortung tragen sie? Am Tag der Urteilsverkundung wird noch einmal ein abschließender Blick auf die Verantwortung und Schuld aller Beteiligten geworfen. Wie viel Schuld tragt die Gesellschaft und warum darf und soll die Gesellschaft bestrafen?
