Lernet-Holenia «si muove con l’eleganza di un topo d’albergo in abito da sera, che vuol fare un colpo», scrisse Gottfried Benn. E quel «colpo» era un azzardo costruire intrecci che avvolgano in ragnatele i mondi sovrapposti entro cui viviamo. Mai cio e apparso cosi evidente come nel Conte di Saint-Germain (1948), il piu vertiginoso fra i suoi intrecci, quello dove piu chiaramente questo grande giocatore e avventuriero della narrazione ha accettato di giocare a carte scoperte. Secondo la leggenda, il conte di Saint-Germain e un figura equivoca e magica, traversa la storia del secolo XVIII e, da allora, riappare capricciosamente a punteggiare il corso degli eventi. Riappare anche nel titolo di questo romanzo, senza esserne pero il protagonista. Saint-Germain e qui, piuttosto, lo spettro che abita queste pagine come un’antica dimora. Sarebbe vano accennare al profilo della storia che in esse si racconta, a tal punto e ricca e polifonica la sua articolazione. La scena e una Vienna torbida e raggelante, alla vigilia dell’annessione dell’Austria da parte della Germania di Hitler, «quell’orribile austriaco», come qualcuno lo definisce in societa. Ma, all’interno di tale cornice, sembra aprirsi una voragine nel tempo, dove incontriamo il ricordo di un assassinio impunito, ma anche un processo a Pilato messo in scena da alcuni collegiali; un vaticinio del conte di Saint-Germain sulla fine della Casa d’Austria, mentre intorno si svolge la guerra dei Sette Anni; due figure femminili opposte ed enigmatiche; le architetture cifrate dei Templari; un vecchio suicida ripescato in uno stagno; l’occhio dei portieri impazienti di denunciare i loro padroni ai padroni del Nuovo Regime; reminiscenze di fatti lontani che affiorano in persone che non li hanno vissuti o non dovrebbero esserne a conoscenza. Su tutto, incombe un’ossessiva metafisica del bastardo e del doppio : il sospetto che l’unica forza capace di sopravvivere sia quella dello spurio, come se la Creazione stessa fosse figlia illegittima di un Dio. Dinanzi al protagonista, sembra «che cio che esiste si stia ritraendo», mentre cio che non esiste lo incalza sempre piu da vicino. Al capezzale di una realta che sta per scomparire – in questo caso un’intera civilta – si affollano le larve di cio che e stato e continua in segreto a operare. Tutto oscilla perennemente fra la mera inesistenza e una sorta di sovrarealta – e quell’oscillazione non permette alcuna certezza, neppure quella del dubbio. Tale e il magistero di Lernet-Holenia nell’infiltrare l’invisibile nei pori del visibile che quando, alla fine, il protagonista morira linciato da una folla di dimostranti, non sappiamo bene se a colpirlo non sia stata invece una torma di ricordi e di morti. Rare volte un romanzo, pur mantenendo una smaltata e invadente presenza dei fatti, dei volti e dei dettagli, e riuscito a scoprire davanti ai nostri occhi con altrettanta sicurezza e sveltezza di mano quel «gigantesco meccanismo d’orologeria» che e «l’orologio del destino».
