Die wichtigsten Bezugspersonen für Kinder sind ihre Eltern. Sie sind die ersten Menschen, denen Neugeborene in die Augen schauen. "Die Zeit unmittelbar nach der Geburt ist der Teil des Lebens außerhalb des Mutterleibes, der die nachhaltigsten Eindrücke hinterlässt.". Die Eltern eines Kindes reagieren schnell, um die Belange ihres Kindes zu erkennen und sich zu kümmern. Dabei geht es über die Sorge von Kleidung und Nahrung hinaus, genauso wichtig ist die emotionale Bindung. Zu den vier Grundbedürfnissen eines Menschen gehört eine sichere Bindung, die durch den Rückhalt der Eltern entsteht. Durch diese Bindung kann das Kind Vertrauen in seine Eltern und sein Umfeld aufbauen. Dieses Vertrauen ist zukünftig ausschlaggebend für die weiteren sozialen Bindungen, für die emotionale Gesundheit und für das eigene Selbstbewusstsein. In den Nachrichten häuft sich das Thema von Kindesmisshandlungen oder aufsehenerregenden Fällen, wo psychisch erkrankte Eltern ihre Kinder töten. In Deutschland versterben jede Woche Kinder unter 15 Jahren an den Folgen von Misshandlung, Gewalt und Vernachlässigung. Dabei spielt eine psychische Erkrankung eines Elternteils die zentrale Rolle. Häufig schlüpfen Kindern von erkrankten Elternteilen in die Eltern-Rolle und kümmern sich um Haushalt, Einkauf, Kochen oder auch um vorhandene Geschwister. Aufgrund von psychischen Krankheiten gibt es leider auch Eltern die sich weniger gut um ihre Kinder kümmern können. "Mehrere Untersuchungen in Europa kommen übereinstimmend zu dem Ergebnis, dass 10 bis 20% der stationär behandelten psychiatrischen Patienten minderjährige Kinder haben, für deren Versorgung sie zuständig sind".
