Philosophische Konzepte sind keine Einheiten, die für sich stehen und Satz für Satz entwickelt werden können, sondern sie beruhen auf Prinzipien, die ihrer äußeren Form zugrunde liegen. Hegel hat sie in der 'freien Tat' verortet, in der philosophisches Denken sich selbst begründet. Alte und neue, aber auch miteinander konkurrierende philosophische Ansätze stehen nicht beziehungslos nebeneinander, sondern verweisen auf ihr genetisches Prinzip, das darauf angelegt ist, statt in absoluter Reinheit in einer Vielfalt unterschiedlicher Realisierungsgestalten zur Erscheinung zu kommen. Die Annäherung an die Welt der antiken Philosophie wird in diesem Werk also über die 'freie Tat' des Gedankens und die in ihr begründeten Regeln gesucht. Reckermann belegt, daß diese Regeln dem Aufbau des 'Reichs' begrifflicher Formen zugrunde liegen und es ermöglichen, die Wirklichkeit als Zusammenhang differenzierter Ordnung zu denken. In der Bewegung ihrer Selbstkonstitution bestimmt die Philosophie aber nicht nur, was in Wahrheit ist, sondern auch ihr Verhältnis zur Welt des Handelns und zeigt so auf, wie sich die Frage nach der besten Form des Lebens mit der nach dem 'Anfang aller Dinge' verbindet. Um diese Selbstkonstitution eines genuin philosophischen Wirklichkeitsverständnisses nachvollziehbar zu machen, stützt sich Reckermann durchgängig auf die beigefügten Auszüge aus Originaltexten, die auch als Verstehenshilfe für eine strukturierte, umfassendere Lektüre dienen können. Die Auswahl der Auszüge erfolgte so, daß sich daraus das prinzipientheoretische Konzept des jeweiligen Autors in seinen Grundzügen und wichtigsten systematischen Konsequenzen erschließen läßt.
