Ce deuxieme volume des Plaidoyers civils de Demosthene comporte dix discours ayant tous trait a des questions de droit prive athenien. Les deux plaidoyers intitules Contre Boeetos portent sur des questions de succession, tout comme le Contre Olympiodoros.. Le premier de ces trois discours souleve une question juridique interessante: celle du nom. Le plaideur accuse son adversaire, Boeetos, qui est son demi-frere, de s'etre fait inscrire sur le registre du deme sous le meme nom que lui. Le Contre Spoudias est riche d'informations sur le droit du mariage. Avec le Contre Phenippos, c'est la question des liturgies qui est posee, c'est-a-dire des impots speciaux auxquels etaient soumis les plus riches citoyens atheniens. Ce plaidoyer est notre principale source sur la pratique de l'antidosis ou echange de biens: par cette procedure, un citoyen athenien qui jugeait etre soumis a un impot trop important pouvait proposer a un autre citoyen qu'il jugeait plus a meme que lui de payer cet impot de le payer a sa place ou d'echanger sa fortune avec lui. Enfin, le Contre Stephanos fait echo au Contre Phormion. Il y est question de faux temoignage dans le proces contre Phormion qui avait trait a la succession du banquier Pasion. Ce plaidoyer est aussi une source pour la connaissance du statut de la fille que son pere laissait depositaire de l'heritage en l'absence d'enfant male et que l'on appelait a Athenes fille epiclere . Tous ces plaidoyers sont presentes dans le present volume dans le texte grec accompagne de la traduction de Louis Gernet. Chacun des discours est precede d'une notice qui aidera le lecteur a mieux comprendre ses enjeux juridiques et historiques.
