About the Author: Debra Costner was born in Staten Island, New York to an Irish Catholic mother, and a German father. She discovered a love of great food early in life, learning to make dishes like Italian sausage lasagna, biscuits with sausage gravy, and fried catfish with corn bread by the time she was 11 years old. Growing up in the age of television, Debra discovered the cooking shows. Beginning with the original French chef, Julia Childs, and graduating to Yan Can Cook and the Frugal Gourmet, she loved watching the cooking shows and learning techniques for food preparation to enhance her skills. In 1981 Debra moved to San Francisco where she has since lived her life. Over the years she developed a sophisticated palate, enjoying the amazing array of gourmet restaurants and variety of ethnic cuisines available in the Bay Area. Debra developed a reputation with friends as a fabulous chef, and some even encouraged her to open a restaurant. From 1988 through 1997, Debra guided white-water rafting trips throughout northern California. She loved the thrill of running the perfect rapid. But even in the wilderness, her cooking skills became legendary. Debra was known for making vegetable lasagna and stuffed baked apples over a campfire. Upon switching to a vegan diet, Debra reignited her love of cooking and inventing new recipes! Unable to find recipes that could satisfy both her dietary requirements and sophisticated palate, she began experimenting and learning a whole new way of cooking. Today Debra continues to develop new recipes to keep her daily menu fresh and interesting.
