Zu Beginn des 13. Jahrhunderts liegt das Reich im Königsstreit zwischen Welfen und Staufern darnieder. Während die Völker südlich und nördlich der Alpen unter den Verheerungen ächzen, erkennt der Papst die Chance, sich gottgleich über die weltlichen Fürsten zu stellen. Friedrich ist ein Novize im mittelalterlichen Köln. Eigentlich soll er als Zweitgeborener eben diesem Papst dienen, doch durch den Tod seines Vaters und seines Halbbruders muss er das weltliche Erbe antreten. Er gerät in den Machtkampf zwischen Kirche und Adel. Als der Welfe Otto obsiegt, folgt ihm Friedrich mit seinem Oheim nach Rom. Otto will Kaiser werden. Und Friedrich? Friedrich will mit dem Kaiser ins Heilige Land ziehen und glorreiche Siege erringen. Wie es das Schicksal will, kommt alles anders. Statt Kreuzzug und großer Siege, lernt er die Schrecken des Eroberungskrieges in Italien kennen. Doch neben der augenscheinlichen Gewalt, begegnen ihm auch die hintergründigen Seiten des Lebens. Bei Hofe hat er eine Begegnung mit Rainald von Toulouse, dem Vetter Ottos. In Rainalds Heimat wütet die Inquisition gegen die Häresie. Durch Gespräche mit Toulouse und eine Reihe anderer Geschehnisse, entwickelt Friedrich Sympathie für die Reinheit der häretischen Lehre; zunehmend zweifelt er an der Integrität der Christenkirche. Mehr und mehr wird seine Ritterfahrt zu einem initiatischen Reifungsprozess. Nach der ersten Zeit in Italien, überwirft sich Kaiser Otto mit dem Papst, der seinerseits bereits mit dem König von Frankreich und deutschen Fürsten eine Intrige gegen den Welfen geschmiedet hat. Der Kaiser, und mit ihm Friedrich, eilt zurück nach deutschen Landen. Dort hält bereits ein Gegenkönig Hof - Friedrich von Staufen. Die Welfen-Allianz beginnt zu bröckeln und ein zähes Ringen um den Thron beginnt. Friedrich bleibt den Welfen treu. Doch nach den Wander- und Reifejahren an der Seite des Kaisers, muss er sich um seine verwaiste Grafschaft kümmern; mit Fleiß und Geschick lässt Friedrich seine Lande erbl
