About the Book

La dama del alba es una obra de teatro escrita por Alejandro Rodríguez Álvarez, más conocido bajo el seudónimo Alejandro Casona, y estrenada en el Teatro Avenida, de Buenos Aires, el 3 de Noviembre de 1944.

Ambientada en la Asturias rural, Martín es un joven taciturno y triste. Anda así tras la desaparición de su esposa Angélica, ahogada unos años antes en la represa del molino. Vive en una casa de labranza con su familia política:


la madre,

el abuelo

y tres niños (Andrés, Falín y Dorina).

Un buen día aparece una peregrina, la dama del alba, mujer mayor y reservada. La acogen con hospitalidad. Martín, en una noche de gran nevada, rescata a Adela, una joven desesperada dispuesta a acabar con su vida. Con el paso de los días, los jóvenes, Martín y Adela, se enamoran y formalizan su compromiso con el beneplácito de toda la familia.

En las hogueras de una noche de San Juan, Martín y Adela confirman su noviazgo. Justo ese día la peregrina anciana vuelve otra vez a la casa, que encuentra vacía, pues todos sus habitantes están en la fiesta del pueblo. Sin embargo, de imprevisto, aparece Angélica, a quien todos creían muerta. En un dramático diálogo entre ambas, descubrimos la verdad.

La novia no había muerto ahogada, sino que se había fugado con un amante.

Tras maltratos y vejaciones de todo tipo, decide volver a su casa, asumiendo el desprecio de los demás.

La dama del alba, que en realidad representa la muerte, ha venido a recogerla, pues tenía una cita con ella. La anciana misteriosa logra persuadir a Angélica para que acepte que su llegada sería negativa para todos y que lo mejor es que realmente se deje llevar por las aguas del remanso del molino.

La dama del alba está llena de diálogos en que los personajes intentan desentrañar qué les supone el destino, quién es la Peregrina, qué influjo tiene sobre ellos y qué les puede deparar su presencia. Dudan en vano, los acontecimientos transcurren por sí mismos y poco pueden hacer para detenerlos.

Alejando Casona consideraba La dama del alba como su obra favorita. Como sucede en otras obras del autor, la pieza presenta el conflicto entre realidad y fantasía, y otros temas recurrentes del mundo de Alejandro Casona:


el suicidio,

la belleza de la muerte,

la fuerza del amor

o la incesante búsqueda de felicidad.
