Dador es un libro de poemas que publicó José Lezama Lima en 1960. Tras un silencio de más de diez años, Lezama reaparece en su Habana natal, con este libro. Aquí la poesía y el esfuerzo del poeta se presentan como una especie de don. Aquí el dador, la persona dotada de la gracia de la creación, interviene en un mundo cuyas reglas son también poéticas.

En esta nueva etapa, el poeta asume un nuevo papel: el de Dador, el que entrega. Si antes era el poeta el que procuraba poseer, ahora sucede el proceso inverso. El poeta ofrece otra belleza que no reside precisamente en el fluir. Más bien se manifiesta en una especie de aspereza en el tránsito de las imágenes, dadas por su carácter no contemplativo sino transformador.

Dador es uno de los atributos del Espíritu Santo, Dador de las felicidades, de la sobrenaturaleza. También el poeta es Dador del acceso a la plenitud de la imagen. Lezama vive un momento de ilusión en un mundo en que, según sus creencias, la resurrección se consigue mediante la poesía.

Esta visión circular de la poesía, la creación literaria, y el arte se despliega en episodios de prosa poética erotizada como el siguiente:


Aparecen tres mesas ocupadas por tres adolescentes con máscaras doradas. En la primera mesa, mitad morado y mitad amarillo muy apagados, cada una de las tres figuras están fuertemente adormecidas. A los pasos de danza, cada uno de los enmascarados sucesivamente baila alrededor de su mesa, y después, describiendo semicírculos y rápidas líneas, va desfilando por las otras dos mesas. Los de la segunda mesa pueden vestir un azul fosforescente con un rojo de fruta tropical roja. Los de la tercera mesa, blanco y un color intermedio, verde de hoja lloviznada, tal vez. Detrás de las tres mesas, cuatro figuras mayores en armaduras. La primera figura, todas han de ser de hermosa estatura, como las mesas se presuponen ocupadas por gentilidad y adolescencia, muestra una armadura pesada y lentísima, comenzando a danzar entre las tres restantes figuras del segundo término. Los enmascarados que ocupaban las primeras mesas se han vuelto a adormecer.


Dador, con sus poemas en prosa y verso parece seguir un ritual. En este libro se percibe otro vigor en la lírica de Lezama Lima. Se tiene la sensación de estar asistiendo a una liturgia cuyas leyes son las de la propia poesía.
