Raymond Poincaré (1860-1934) è una delle figure più rappresentative della III Repubblica francese. Ministro in diversi dicasteri, presidente del Consiglio per cinque volte e presidente della Repubblica dal 1913 al 1920, Poincaré ebbe un ruolo centrale nella Prima Guerra Mondiale, nel corso della quale, nel pieno rispetto delle prerogative della carica che ricopriva, guidò la Francia realizzando quell'Union Sacrée che fece da collante del paese durante quei difficili anni, che videro alla guida del governo René Viviani, Aristide Briand e Georges Clemenceau. Abile politico, fu uomo capace di superare le proprie antipatie e rivalità politiche in funzione del bene comune, come quando chiamò alla presidenza del Consiglio il radicale socialista Clemenceau, soprannominato il Tigre, che non stimava particolarmente, ma del quale apprezzava la fermezza e la capacità di decisione. Poincaré ci ha lasciato un'ampia documentazione della sua lunga e piena attività ai vertici della politica francese, raccolta sotto il comune titolo di Au service de la France: neuf années de souvenirs, che in dieci volumi ripercorre lo sviluppo degli avvenimenti dalla crisi di Agadir del 1912 alla fine della Prima Guerra Mondiale nel 1918, cui si aggiunge il presente volume che descrive in dettaglio i giorni del luglio 1914, quando si prepararono i tragici avvenimenti che condussero al conflitto. Da questo resoconto, pur di parte, ma puntualmente documentato, si possono trarre preziose indicazioni su come si svolsero i fatti e come il gioco della diplomazia e i fraintendimenti reali o voluti condussero alla carneficina del primo vero conflitto di massa della storia europea. In queste pagine vi si può anche leggere il sorgere della motivazione dell'intransigenza francese alla stipula della funesta pace di Versailles, che tanto costò anche alla stessa Francia un ventennio dopo.
