About the Book

The area of cognitive development has received a considerable attention in the literature on hearing impairment because of the link between linguistic and cognitive development. The hearing impaired population has often served as a 'laboratory' group to test the dependence or independence of cognition and language. Much of the research on cognitive development has followed Piagetian model. Researchers have compared the performance of normally hearing and hearing impaired children on several Piagetian conservation tasks and drawn conclusions about the relationship between language and cognition. Piaget's theory of cognitive development is a stage theory which holds that all children pass through a series of quantitatively different levels of organization. Thus, one could argue that a hearing impaired child would progress cognitively through different stages at the same rate as the normal child. However, the problem posed before a researcher is that the hearing impaired children unlike normal children lack sense of hearing. Piaget's theory postulates that cognitive development takes place when a human being interacts with environment. Through se nse organs human be ing colle cts environmental experiences and assimilates these experiences into existing cognitive structure. Further, new cognitive structure is developed by grouping the critical attributes of the existing cognitive structure through accommodation. Unlike normal children, hearing impaired children suffer from hearing loss. However, all other sense organs of hearing impaired children function actively in interaction process with Preface e nvironme nt. The re fore , within this theore tical framework hearing impaired children has been studied as developing their cognitive structure even though they do not have linguistic competency due to loss of hearing. Environment and interaction of the organism with environment play significant role for the development of cognition.
