About the Book

Since 2002 Monika Merva has been documenting the lives of children who are living in a government housing facility in Hungary; a facility for children who are fleeing from abusive and poverty-stricken backgrounds. They call this place The City of Children.

Based in New York, Merva has exhibited at many international venues, including the Griffin Photography Museum, Winchester, MA; the RayKo Photo Center, San Francisco, CA; FotoFest, Houston, TX; and The International House, New York, NY. Her work is in collections such as the George Eastman House.

Anthony Bannon is the director of George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film in Rochester, NY.


About the Author: Monika Merva, born in 1969, graduated from Northeastern University in Boston, MA, with a degree in philosophy and received her MFA in photography from Savannah College of Art and Design. After moving to New York, she worked as a freelance photographer for several magazines, including The New Yorker, Details, and New York Times Magazine.
Her work is in public collections such as the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, George Eastman House, Hungarian Museum of Photography, and the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Art Collection. She has exhibited her work at many international venues, including the Griffin Museum, Winchester; the The RayKo Photo Center, San Francisco; The International House, New York, NY. The City of Children will be exhibited at FotoFest Houston 2012.

Anthony Bannon, Ph.D, born 1943, is the director of George Eastman House, International Museum of Photography & Film, located in Rochester, N.Y. He has held that position since 1996, previously serving as director of the Burchfield-Penney Arts Center and director of Cultural Affairs on the campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo, both located in Buffalo, N.Y. George Eastman House is the world's oldest museum of photography and largest museum of photography and film.

Lynne Haney is Professor of Sociology at New York University. She has conducted research on the welfare and penal systems in both the United States and in Eastern Europe.

Anne Wilkes Tucker is an American museum curator of photographic works. She has worked at the George Eastman House, the Museum of Modern Art, New York and is currently Curator of Photography at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
