Die Zwillinge Cilli und Mel sind unzertrennlich. Sie teilen alles, Interessen, Freunde, eine glückliche Kindheit. Doch dann schlägt das Schicksal grausam zu. Sie besuchen eine Aufführung im Puppentheater, von einem Gang zur Toilette kehrt Cilli nicht mehr zurück. "Wo ist Cilli?", fragen die Eltern, als sie ohne die Schwester nach Hause kommt. Wie soll sie es ihnen sagen? Eine Welle des Entsetzens reißt die Familie in den Abgrund. Eine großangelegte Suchaktion bringt kein Ergebnis. Der Verlust und Vorwürfe der Mutter lösen in Mel ein riesiges Schuldgefühl aus, das ihre Kindheit prägt. Sie vereinsamt, leidet an Essstörung, die Familie zerbricht, auch am Selbstmord des Vaters. Mutter und Tochter werden sich mehr als fremd, Ablehnung bestimmt ihre Beziehung. Als erwachsene Frau versucht sie in ihrem künstlerischen Schaffen die Sehnsucht nach der Schwester zu verarbeiten, und sucht als Lehrerin die Nähe zu Kindern. "Mit Cilli lebte ich nur in einer Kinderwelt, nie in der Erwachsenenwelt", sagt Mel. Die Liebe zu einer Schülerin, die sie an Cilli erinnert, stürzt sie in einen erneuten Konflikt, der sie aus dem Gleichgewicht wirft. Hilfe findet sie bei Veit, ihrem Mann und einstigen Mitschüler, der als Jugendlicher Cillis Verschwinden miterlebte. Unermüdlich hatte er damals Fahndungsplakate in der Stadt verteilt. Was hätte sie ohne ihn angefangen, wie leben können? fragt sich Mel. Er begleitet sie bei ihrer jahrelangen Suche, unterstützt sie, als überraschend Mels Mutter stirbt, gerät dabei allmählich selbst an die Grenzen seiner Geduld. Dann, nach dreißig Jahren vergeblicher Suche stoßen sie unerwartet auf Cillis Spur.
About the Author: Nach ihrer Erzählung "Cilli", in der sie das Drama um ein verschwundenes Zwillingsmädchen schildert, legt sie dieses zweite Buch vor mit dem Titel: "Als sie über die Kuppe fuhren." In drei Geschichten geraten Frauen in verwirrende Lebenssituationen, Lisbet absichtlich, Dora unerwartet, und vier Freundinnen vermutlich zufällig oder doch vorherbestimmt? Brigitte Karcher interessierte bei dieser Arbeit vor allem das Unerwünschte, das Verbotene, das Unerklärliche, dem sich die Frauen gegenüber sehen und sich auf unterschiedlichste Weise dazu verhalten. Eigene Erlebnisse inspirierten sie dabei ebenso wie frei Erfundenes, und sorgen für überraschende Wendungen und Spannung in den Geschichten. Brigitte Karcher ist verheiratet, lebt mit ihrem Mann in Mering bei Augsburg. Ihre beiden Söhne besucht sie in Berlin und Leipzig.
