Jacques Grevin (1538-1570), medecin et poete francais ne a Clermont-en-Beauvaisis dans le departement actuel de l'Oise, est surtout celebre pour son oeuvre theatrale. Il fut, a la suite immediate d'Etienne Jodelle et de Theodore de Beze, l'un des premiers tragediens de langue francaise. Son Cesar, de 1561, ici presente dans une edition erudite, savamment commentee, est considere comme la meilleure piece de Grevin. Le lecteur sera non seulement frappe par la rigueur de la composition (la coherence de la versification est remarquable), mais aussi par la vigueur, l'elan d'un style qui, dans ses periodes declamatoires les plus reussies, annonce Racine ou Corneille. On trouvera ici, a la suite du Cesar, la piece Julius Caesar, ecrite en latin par Marc-Antoine Muret, qui fut le precepteur de Grevin. On s'en doute, les comparaisons entre les deux oeuvres n'ont pas manque, souvent dans l'intention maligne de rabaisser Grevin au rang de plagiaire. Jeffrey Foster, qui a tres minutieusement analyse les textes, conclut qu'en realite Grevin s'est surtout inspire de la composition de Muret, se singularisant tout a fait dans les autres registres. L'honnetete de Grevin s'en trouve confortee, lui qui ecrit dans un "brief discours" preliminaire: "la ou [les deux tragedies] seront confrontees, on trouvera la verite. Je ne veux pourtant nier que s'il se trouve quelque traict digne d'estre loue, qu'il ne soit de Muret, lequel a este mon precepteur quelque temps es lettres humaines, et auquel je donne le meilleur, comme l'ayant appris de luy."
