Las Cartas de relación de Hernán Cortés, son cinco cartas escritas durante siete años y dirigidas al emperador Carlos V de España. Constituyen uno de los testimonios más notables de la historia de la conquista de América.

En sus cartas Cortés describe su viaje a México, su llegada a Tenochtitlán, capital del Imperio azteca, y algunos de los eventos que resultarían en la conquista de México.

En las cinco cartas, escritas durante siete años al emperador Carlos V, plasmó su intención de conquistar y poblar nuevas tierras, siempre a nombre del rey y para gloria de España.


La primera carta escrita por Cortés titulada: Primera carta de relación de la justicia y regimiento de la Rica Villa de la Vera Cruz a la reina doña Juana y al emperador Carlos V, su hijo, se perdió. Si bien Francisco López de Gómara tuvo una copia e incluyó un breve resumen en su crónica. En 1842 se publicó una carta enviada por la Junta de regimiento de la ciudad de Veracruz, fechada el 10 de julio de 1519. Se titula: Carta de la justicia y regimiento de la Rica Villa de la Veracruz. La carta de Veracruz o Primera relación está dirigida a la reina Juana y a su hijo Carlos, ya para entonces rey de España.

La segunda carta de relación es en primera persona. Es la carta que describe las peripecias de la marcha hacia México Tenochtitlan, la estancia en la capital mexica, el encuentro con los hombres de Pánfilo de Narváez, la huida de la ciudad y la derrota de la Noche Triste.

En la tercera carta de relación se narra el cerco a Tenochtitlan y Cortés se describe a sí mismo como un estratega, astuto y valiente. En su narración enfatizó que la tierra no estaba pacificada aún y señaló la importancia de su figura para mantener el control de la población indígena.

En la cuarta relación Hernán Cortés explica por qué no había obedecido las instrucciones enviadas por el monarca en 1523. En una misiva el emperador Carlos V le recomendó encarecidamente la prohibición de las ejecuciones de que eran víctimas los indígenas. Además de algunas instrucciones para modificar ciertos aspectos de la administración de la hacienda real. Aquí Cortés intentó convencer al emperador de su eficacia como gobernador de los nuevos territorios ganados para la corona y expone los muchos servicios prestados en su beneficio.

La quinta relación, fechada en septiembre de 1526, narra la expedición a las Hibueras, la ejecución de Cuauhtémoc, el último tlatoani mexica y su regreso a la ciudad de México, en donde fue despojado de su título de gobernador.

La figura de Cortés se convertiría en el emblema del conquistador y, asimismo, de la crueldad, la barbarie y la astucia.

Del convulso encuentro entre la cultura occidental y la azteca, que enfrentó y mezcló a indios y españoles, nacería un nuevo pueblo y una nueva cultura.
