About the Book

La Compagnia ferroviaria Southern Pacific Railroad sta costruendo un ponte che attraversando il canyon dovrà collegare le regioni dell'Est con la California.
Nel campo allestito dai lavoratori della ferrovia avvengono due omicidi: un bambino e una prostituta che lavorava in uno dei numerosi saloon della città. Negli stessi giorni scompare una ragazza del saloon, azione che viene attribuita a un rapimento ad opera degli indiani Navajo.
Il Major, Gordon Albreit, preoccupato per la situazione chiama a indagare Abraham Smith, agente della Pinckerton National Detective Agency, il quale arriva facendosi accompagnare da una donna di colore di nome Leila, seminando scandalo in una comunità in cui la liberazione degli schiavi non è accettata.

Dario Balzaretti, vive e lavora a Novara. È laureato in Lettere a indirizzo storico medievale conseguita all'Università degli studi di Torino nel 1981. Giornalista free lance dal 1981 al 1986. Insegna letteratura e Storia in una scuola superiore di Novara. Ha pubblicato i romanzi "La pietra di bezoar" nel 1991, "Una storia" nel 2010; il saggio "Uno zuccone imperatore. Vita e opere di Tiberio Claudio Germanico", il giallo "Delitto a scuola" Nulla die edizioni nel 2016 (terzo classificato Premio Giallo Garda 2017), il romanzo Donata dalle onde, Nulla die, secondo classifica al Premio del mare M. Guarnaccia 2020 e finalista al premio Argentario 2020. Sempre per Nulla die ha pubblicato il saggio: La Scuola, il mal essere Italiani, 2021.
Insegnante di Letteratura, studia l'Antichità romana, il Tardoantico e il Medioevo.
Ha partecipato e ottenuto riconoscimenti nei premi Bontempelli Marinetti (1984) con il racconto "Il ganzo e il gonzo"; il Premio poesia Val Formazza 1988, secondo premio con la poesia "La sera"; il Premio Dante Graziosi (2004 segnalato con il racconto Il torello di San Antonio pubblicato in "Sono queste che contano e altre storie" Piccolo Torchio editore e 2008 terzo premio con Il compagno senza voce pubblicato da Piccolo Torchio in "L'America del Pilade e altre storie"). Nel 2021 pubblica due puntate della serie Città in Giallo con la PlaceBook Publishing.
