About the Book

Al cabo de ocho siglos, el Cantar de Mio Cid sigue siendo uno de los poemas épicos más notables, y el único que sobrevivió de la España medieval. En él se narran las gestas legendarias del caballero Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, el Cid Campeador, en un relato donde la ficción y los acontecimientos históricos se mezclan de un modo único.

Las vicisitudes de la vida del Cid


los dos destierros,

las campañas victoriosas de Valencia

y la coronación de sus hijas como reinas de Aragón y Navarra,

son hechos clave en la historia del Cid y ocasiones para descubrir su personalidad.

Desde el siglo XIII el Cantar de Mio Cid les ofrece a los lectores una representación vívida y conmovedora de algunas de las inquietudes y las pasiones humanas más universales, como la justicia, la lealtad, la traición, el honor o los celos.

De este libro existe un solo ejemplar del texto original que se conserva en la Biblioteca Nacional en Madrid. En el siglo XVI estuvo en el Archivo del Concejo de Vivar. Después estuvo en un convento del mismo pueblo. Ruiz de Ulibarri hizo una copia en 1596.

Luego, Eugenio Llaguno y Amírola, secretario del Consejo de Estado, lo sacó de allí en 1779 para que lo publicase Tomás Antonio Sánchez.

Terminada la edición, Llaguno lo tuvo en su poder y lo pasó a sus herederos. En el siglo XIX estuvo en poder de Pascual de Gayangos y hacia 1858 lo consultó Damas-Hinard. En esa época estuvo en Boston a petición de Ticknor.

En 1863 lo tuvo el primer marqués de Pidal y por entonces lo estudió Florencio Janer. Más tarde lo heredó Alejandro Pidal y en su casa lo estudiaron Vollmöller, Baist, Huntington y Ramón Menéndez Pidal.

Finalmente pasó a la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid en 1960. Se trata de un tomo de 74 hojas de pergamino grueso, le faltan tres, una al inicio y dos entre las hojas 47, 48 y 69, 70. En muchas páginas hay manchas provocadas por los reactivos utilizados desde el siglo XVI para leer los pasajes ininteligibles. Aunque estos pasajes no son demasiados.

La encuadernación es del siglo XV. Las hojas están ordenadas en once cuadernos. Todo el manuscrito original es un texto continuo sin separación en cantares, ni espacios entre los versos, que siempre empiezan con letras mayúsculas.


La presente edición conserva el texto original del libro, sin actualizaciones ortográficas.
