Le cancer des voies biliaires, également connu sous le nom de cholangiocarcinome, prend naissance dans une voie biliaire. Pour comprendre ce cancer, vous devez connaître les voies biliaires et ce qu'elles font normalement. Les voies biliaires sont une série de tubes minces qui vont du foie au petit intestin. Leur tâche principale consiste à faire passer un liquide appelé bile du foie et de la vésicule biliaire à l'intestin grêle, où il aide à digérer les graisses contenues dans les aliments. Les différentes parties du système des voies biliaires portent des noms différents. tubes (appelés ductules). Les ductules se rejoignent pour former de petits tubes appelés conduits. Ceux-ci fusionnent dans des conduits plus grands, puis dans les conduits hépatiques gauche et droit. Tous ces conduits dans le foie sont appelés canaux biliaires intrahépatiques. Les conduits hépatiques gauche et droit sortent du foie et se rejoignent pour former le canal hépatique commun dans une zone appelée le hile. Plus bas, la vésicule biliaire (un petit organe qui stocke la bile) est reliée au canal hépatique commun par un petit conduit appelé le canal cystique. conduit est appelé le voie biliaire principale. La voie biliaire principale traverse une partie du pancréas avant de rejoindre le canal pancréatique et se jette dans la première partie de l'intestin grêle (le duodénum) au niveau de l'ampoule de Vater.
La résection des voies biliaires est nécessaire pour le traitement du cholangiocarcinome et est parfois indiquée dans les résections de tumeurs malignes du foie et de la vésicule biliaire. L'objectif de cette revue rétrospective était de caractériser les résultats chirurgicaux chez les patients soumis à une résection des voies biliaires pour une tumeur maligne lorsque des procédures supplémentaires, en particulier des résections hépatiques ou vasculaires, ont été réalisées.

Habituellement, une partie du foie est retirée, ainsi que le canal cholédoque, la vésicule biliaire, les ganglions lymphatiques voisins et parfois une partie du pancréas et de l'intestin grêle. Ensuite, le chirurgien relie les conduits restants à l'intestin grêle. Il s'agit d'une opération complexe qui peut entraîner des complications potentiellement mortelles pour certaines personnes.
