Los Caminos del Viento retratan la Francia medieval, alrededor de 1212, en la región de Bretaña, una época en la que los franceses amargaban la invasión de su territorio por parte de los temidos normandos, que se establecieron allí con el propósito de dominar toda Europa. Los británicos, entonces, tuvieron que someterse a la arrogancia de los dominadores y también rendir homenaje al Duque de Normandía, el odioso señorío extranjero que se les impuso. En el siglo XIII también fueron evidentes las consecuencias inmediatas del Gran Cisma de Oriente, de 1054, que desencadenó una violenta persecución de los abusos y herejías cometidos contra los dogmas católicos, culminando con la creación del Tribunal de la Santa Inquisición.

Y, en el medio, hay romances entre las parejas Roland y Anne - Louise y Evelyn y Frédéric; los primeros, aunque ambos pertenecientes a la hidalguía, se vieron vilmente traicionados y separados, como consecuencia de tramas generadas por los intereses inmediatos de quienes, viviendo en tiempos de costumbres aun tan brutales - ¡todavía se discutía si las mujeres tendrían o no un alma! - y que consideraban el matrimonio solo un medio para servir sus ganancias; y la otra pareja, Evelyn y Frédéric, resultó ser objeto de intolerancia, ya que ella era noble y normanda, y él era un simple escudero de un noble francés.
