Établir un équilibre convenable entre vie familiale et vie professionnelle est un enjeu auquel tous les parents sont confrontés. Si les parents ne parviennent pas à instaurer l'équilibre souhaité entre vie familiale et vie professionnelle, non seulement leur bien-être diminue mais ils réduisent aussi leur offre de travail, ce qui freine le développement économique. Une diminution du taux de natalité a des conséquences évidentes sur l'offre future de main-d'ouvre et sur la viabilité des régimes de protection sociale. Comme les parents jouent un rôle crucial dans le développement de l'enfant, et donc dans celui des sociétés de demain, les responsables politiques ont de nombreuses raisons de les aider à mieux concilier famille et travail. La série Bébés et employeurs traite de la meilleure façon de concilier travail et vie de famille. Les quatre premiers volumes ont analysé les politiques et leur impact sur les familles en Australie, au Danemark et aux Pays-Bas (2002); en Autriche, en Irlande et au Japon (2003); en Nouvelle-Zélande, au Portugal et en Suisse (2004); au Canada, en Finlande, au Royaume-Uni et en Suède (2005).
