About the Book

A comprehensive overview of biofabrication techniques for orthopedics and their novel applications

With an ever-increasing global population and the rise in the occurrence of orthopedic diseases amongst an aging population, it is essential for technological advances to meet this growing medical need. Orthopedic biofabrication is a cutting-edge field that seeks to produce novel clinical solutions to this mounting problem, through the incorporation of revolutionary technologies that have the potential to not only transform healthcare, but also provide highly automated and personalized patient solutions. With the advances in the discipline, there is a significant growing interest in biofabrication for orthopedics in research activity geared towards routine clinical use.

Ideal for a broad readership amongst medical practitioners and scientists, Biofabrication for Orthopedics summarizes all aspects of the topic: detailed information on the technology, along with advanced developments, research progress, and future perspectives on biofabrication for orthopedics--particularly on the potential applications for tissue engineering technologies. In doing so, the book describes the various biomaterials--natural and synthetic--use for orthopedics and discusses the many ways in which these materials can be used in all parts of the body. As such, it offers detailed information on a wide range of applications in the fields of biology and clinical and industrial manufacturing.

Biofabrication for Orthopedicsreaders will also find:

Insights into the applications of biofabrication technologies in various bodily functions

  • Thorough discussion of different biofabrication techniques used in creating orthopedic products, like stereolithography, cell sheet and organ bioprinting, electrospinning, and microfluidics
  • Discussion of a wide range of diverse functions, such as bone implants, skin regeneration, vascularization, meniscus remodeling, and more

Biofabrication for Orthopedics isa useful reference for those in a variety of research fields like medical-related practitioners and scientists, materials science, medicine, and manufacturing, as well as the libraries who support them.

About the Author: Wenguo Cui is a full professor at the Shanghai Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China. He is currently the group leader of Regenerative Biomaterials. His scientific interests are focused on the development of novel biomaterials and nanomaterials for tissue regeneration, drug delivery and disease treatment. So far, he has published more than 130 peer-reviewed papers in international journals (H=38), edited one book and contributed 9 book chapters. Besides, he has won the prize of Fundamental Bone Research Scholar in Chinese Medical Association, the first prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Shanghai, the second prize of Outstanding Achievement Award in Science Research in the Ministry of Education twice and Chinese Medicine Award and Huaxia Medicine Award, Chinese government and so on.

Xin Zhao is Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong SAR, China. She obtained her PhD at University College London, UK and postdoc training at Harvard University, USA before joining PolyU. She is dedicated to Translational Regenerative Medicine, integrating multi-disciplinary approaches including material science, cell biology and medicine to modulate cell microenvironments, control cell behaviors and generate tissue-engineered organs, for addressing clinical issues. So far she has published more than 80 articles in leading journals.

Shen Liu is a Professor at the Department of Orthopaedics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital, China. He obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees at Department of Orthopaedics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital and his postdoctor degree in Johns Hopkins University, USA. His major is orthopedics including reconstruction of tendon adhesion, soft tissue defects, bone defects and cartilage defects using clinical treatment and tissue engineering. He was fund by three National Natural Science Foundation of China, 2013 annual Shanghai Jiao Tong University Morningstar Young Scholar Award and the 2015 annual Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission Star Program.
