Wurden in den letzten Jahren noch den Aktivitäten auf Vertriebsseite in vielen Unternehmen oftmals mehr Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt, so ist heute durch die dynamischen Marktverhältnisse die Kostenseite umso wichtiger für den Unternehmenserfolg. Besonders durch die immer geringere eigene Wertschöpfung der Unternehmen, die sich zunehmend auf ihre Kernkompetenzen spezialisieren, müssen immer mehr Rohstoffe, Baugruppen, Lohnarbeiten oder Dienstleistungen von Lieferanten bezogen werden. Dies hat zwar den Vorteil, dass Kosten in der eigenen Fertigung eingespart werden können, jedoch muss dann in der Beschaffung der Grundstein gelegt werden, damit diese Auslagerungen für das Unternehmen auch rentabel sind. Dadurch, dass immer mehr Systemkomponenten und komplette Baugruppen von Lieferanten bezogen werden, müssen auch immer weniger Einzelteile beschafft werden. Pro Bestellung werden damit immer kleinere Lieferlose kostenintensiver Produkte in immer häufigeren Frequenzen geordert, womit die Logistikkosten weiter ansteigen. Zudem machen es die immer kürzer werdenden Produktlebenszyklen notwendig, dass der Einkauf durch genaue Markt- und Lieferantenkenntnis in der Lage sein muss, zeitnah Zugang zu neuen Technologien zu bekommen. Dadurch erhöhen sich aber auch die Gesamtkosten der Beschaffung, da der Aufwand für Forschung und Entwicklung für die Lieferanten der neuen Produktkomponenten steigt und diese die Kosten an den Kunden überwälzen.
