DEN DANSKE KULTURSTYRELSE har valgt 2006 til "Renæssance-År". Det er tanken at pege på Renæssancens betydning i Danmark. Inden for dramaet er det naturligvis den engelske elizabethanske Renæssance med William Shakespeare der er den store inspirationskilde. BEGYNDELSEN TIL MODERNE TIDER handler om 1500-tallets engelske bønder der blev smidt på landevejene fordi fåreavl betalte sig bedre end landbrug. Hér skabtes industriens første lønproletariat. - BILL SHAKESPEARE forlader sin fødeby Stratford-on-Avon i 1587 og dukker op i London i 1592. Det er skuespillets hypotese at han i de mellemliggende år har oplevet og er påvirket af elendigheden på de engelske landeveje. Belyst forskelligt handler de to spil om denne side af Renæssancen.
About the Author: Født 1923. Uddannet skuespiller ved Odense Teater 1946. Debuterede som dramatiker 1956 med friluftsspillet i københavnske og stockholmske parker "Trylleri i gaden" i samarbejde med Poul Henningsen. Derefter kom radiospillet "I morgen skal jeg videre" 1958. Det store gennembrud var musicalen "Teenagerlove" 1962 (musik: Finn Savery), en af Det Kongelige Teaters største succeser nogensinde. Ernst Bruun Olsens dramatiske produktion er omfattende og inden for en bred vifte af genrer: musicals, skuespil med historiske emner og samtidsdramatik, der forener det psykologiske, sociologiske og poetiske. Blandt de mest kendte er værker som "Bal i den Borgerlige", "Hvor gik Nora hen da hun gik ud", "Postbudet fra Arles", "Prometheus i Saksen", "Da Jazzen kom til byen", "Claire Lacombe og den store Revolution" og "Betty Nansen på Betty Nansen". Hertil kommer enkelte tvspil og en lang række radiospil. En del af spillene foreligger trykt. I 2005 udkom "Ti kongeligt kasserede skuespil og ét aldrig indleveret". Denne bog sådan som den foreliggende "Begyndelsen til moderne tider" og "Bill Shakespeare" er udgivet med støtte fra "Ernst Bruun Olsens fond til støtte for Ernst Bruun Olsens ytringsfrihed". Han har altid holdt fast i sin tro på muligheden for at forandre verden og på det enkelte menneskes ansvarlighed, og den kunstneriske drivkraft henter han i sin lange vrede over verdens tilstand.
