Natürlich, daß diese erste Entwickelungen so simpel, zart und wunderbar waren, wie wir sie in allen Hervorbringungen der Natur sehen. Der Keim fällt in die Erde und erstirbt: der Embryon wird im Verborgnen gebildet, wie's kaum die Brille des Philosophen a priori gutheißen würde, und tritt ganz gebildet hervor: die Geschichte der frühesten Entwicklungen des menschlichen Geschlechts, wie sie uns das ältste Buch beschreibt, mag also so kurz und apokryphisch klingen, daß wir vor dem philosophischen Geist unsres Jahrhunderts, der nichts mehr als Wunderbares und Verborgnes hasset, damit zu erscheinen erblöden: eben deswegen ist sie wahr. Nur eins also angemerkt. Scheint nicht selbst für das Maulwurfsauge dieses lichtesten Jahrhunderts doch ein längeres Leben, eine stiller und zusammenhangender würkende Natur, kurz eine Heldenzeit des Patriarchenalters dazu zu gehören, die erste Formen des Menschengeschlechts, welche es auch seien, den Stammvätern aller Nachkommenschaft ein- und für die Ewigkeit anzubilden? Wir laufen jetzt nur vorüber und durch die Welt her; Schatten auf Erden! Alles Gute und Böse, was wir mitbringen (und wir bringen wenig mit, weil wir alles hier erst empfangen), haben wir meist auch das Schicksal wieder mitzunehmen: unsre Jahre, Lebensläufe, Vorbilder, Unternehmungen, Eindrücke, die Summe unsrer Hinwürkung auf Erden ist kraftloser Traum einer Nachtwache Geschwätz! Du lässest sie dahinfahren usw.
