About the Book

Reinaldo Arenas was born in Holguín, Oriente, Cuba in 1943. On December 7, 1990, he ended his life and in a letter he left behind, he held Fidel Castro responsible for this final decision. He is considered one of the best Cuban writers of the twentieth century. He wrote poetry, short stories, theater, essays and novels. Among them are: El color del verano, Celestino antes del alba, El Asalto, Viaje a La Habana, La loma del Ángel and the collection of essays in his book Necesidad de libertad.

The writer José Abreu Felippe writes about this book: Arturo, the son of La Vieja Rosa, goes to a concert and upon leaving, still shaken by the rain of unusual sensations caused by the music, he finds himself in the middle of one of the many "collections" that were carried out against young people. Having too long hair, conspicuously tight clothing or "looking" homosexual were more than enough reasons to be sentenced to hard labor. In the horror of a concentration camp for homosexuals, Arturo builds with his imagination a universe inhabited by regal elephants. It builds palaces with more than amazing hanging gardens, seas and rivers populated by short and sumptuous creatures, churches, windows and forests: beauty as a protective wall against barbarism and irrationality. Arturo, the brightest star is a deluge of words harmonized by music, a symphony that takes you from the first note and projects you into an abyss where there are no escapes, where in the end death is a relief that comes, when it is almost over. envisions "the monumental line of the royal elephants." "One of the most heartbreakingly beautiful novels ever written."
